little hazy inside the bay and the valleys. and a few patches of coastal fog. toward the afternoon mostly sunny skies temperatures warmer today. maybe some mid-70s in the valleys, 60s inside the bay and still cool 50s and low 60s toward the coastline. hazy over the bay temperatures cooler this morning mid-40s into santa rosa, 49 in san jose and 52 in san francisco. this afternoon, still breezy into san francisco at 63 degrees. we will find a few more 70s in the valleys. 71 in santa rosa and about 72 degrees in concord. all right, let's check the roads with elizabeth. and this traffic alert in danville has -- is still in effect for the last couple of hours since about 3:00 this morning. two lanes are blocked for police investigation. it was a police pursuit actually that ended in a chase. so two lanes will blocked between el pintado and el cerro as well as the el pintado off- ramp. expect delays. mass transit is good. bart has 30 trains no delay.

ace train is actually three minutes early so no delay there. caltrain and ferries everything else is quiet. here's a live look outside. san mateo bridge traffic still moving at the speed limit. a high wind advisory though was issued shortly after midnight and it's still in effect. it's the only one out there now so if you are crossing the bay bridge right now there's no delay things look good heading into san francisco. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you guys. now to breaking news. check out this mangled car. concord police tried to stop the driver around 10:30 last night for reckless driving near highway 680. the driver refused to stop. and that led to a chase at speeds near 100 miles per hour ending in a crash in danville. 19-year-old michael holden of concord is in critical condition at a hospital. police say he was driving a stolen car. 5:01. the maui airport has released surveillance video showing the bay area teenager stowed away on a plane from san jose stumbling on to the tarmac in hawaii. kpix 5's kiet do joins us live

from mineta international airport to explain why the video is so significant. reporter: we know what this boy was doing, how he looked and what exactly he was acting like as he landed in maui within the hour of him getting off that airplane. the hawaiian department of transportation has released this surveillance video of that 15-year-old boy dangling his legs from the wheel well of the hawaiian airlines jet and dropping to the tarmac. the shadowing figure is 15-year- old yahya abdi who then wanders around the area. the six minute video shows him wobbling toward the front of the plane and approaching a worker in a yellow vest. after surviving subfreezing temperatures and low oxygen levels, he looks disoriented. >> for me, this is the missing ingredient because it just makes the story believable watching him walk after he got out of that wheel well. >> our hope is that we can find out all the intimate details about how he went about getting on the tarmac, what his mental

thoughts were, what was in his mind when it happened, what was his intent. >> reporter: and the boy flew back to the bay area over the weekend. he is now in the custody of the santa clara county department of family and children's services. san jose police are trying to talk to him and his lawyer. the fbi said previously he wouldn't be facing any charges. but now san jose police are looking at charges of trespassing. live at the airport, kiet do, kpix 5. >> the punishment could end up being just a citation and a fine. a body found inside a car that plunged off a marin county highway has been identified as a missing real estate developer from mill valley. the family reported him missing sunday. the car was found yesterday onshore line highway off mount tamalpais. crews had to cut a path from shrubs to recover the body. he had been scheduled to appear in court this friday on federal fraud charges. new this morning, a mountain lion has been taken

off the streets of mountain view. the 110-pound cat was captured. kpix 5's cate caugiran has the story. >> reporter: mountain view police say the mountain lion was transferred to an undisclosed location. two reports of mountain lion sightings came into mountain view pd6:30 yesterday near rangesdorf park. by the time they got there the cat had crossed the busy california street and holed up in the underground parking garage of the casa del rey apartments. it took hours before game wardens got the mountain lion out of the garage. and that's because game wardens when they were ready to tranquilize the mountain lion turned out they didn't have all the parts they needed for the gun so they had to call in another game warden. we have a close-up video of that mountain lion underneath a car in the garage during the standoff. pdthe police department was prepared to use lethal force if he tried to escape before the

game wardens could catch him. we know now the mountain lion is safe and expected to survive. >> cate, we know the mountain lion was tagged, as well. do we know who was tracking it? >> reporter: it's a group called the santa cruz puma society. they are a nonprofit group that tracks mountain lions around the bay area. they identified the mountain lion as 47-m, a male cat. they told us yesterday's jaunt through mountain view was 47-m looking to establish his own territory. reporting live in the newsroom, cate caugiran, kpix 5. new this morning, a man arrested for allegedly shooting and killing his neighbor in san francisco has been released from jail without any charges. 26-year-old man was killed at his apartment building on mission street on saturday. a 68-year-old person surrendered to police. the victim's family says guillermo was shot because he accidentally entered the suspect's home thinking it was his apartment. the shooter was released yesterday as investigators tried to figure out if the shooting was in self-defense or

not. happening right now in san francisco, two people are hurt after they were struck by a stolen car. kpix 5's anne makovec live in the marina neighborhood. the hunt is on. . >> reporter: this is where the car ended up in san francisco. that's when a driver and people inside the car took off on foot. police haven't arrested them. police were initially following the car at around 9:40 last night because they thought it might be stolen. they say it sped up, hit a pedestrian and another vehicle and crashed into that garage here at franklin and chestnut. several witnesses saw it happen. >> the person that run over honestly that was just so violent, it was just very -- very, very fast. >> reporter: so two people were injured. that pedestrian that she was just referring to,and the driver of the car that the car

hit. but we are told that those injuries are not life- threatening. police have detained several people they say, but they have not yet made an arrest. live in san francisco, anne makovec, kpix 5. a san francisco supervisor is proposing kill switch legislation that would affect all smartphones sold in the city. it's because we're seeing scenes like this too often. cell phone thefts account for nearly 70% of all robberies in san francisco this year. the new technology would render phones inoperable if lost or stolen. if the city ordinance passes, it's not certain it would hold up in court. 5:07 now. new this morning people in pleasanton will get the word from the city they have to cut back on water use effective immediately. the city council voted last night to require water customers to reduce their use of potable water by some 25%. residents can only water their lawns two days a week. they can't hose down their driveways. and they could be fined for using too much water.

[ crying ] >> castro was sentenced in august to more than 1,000 years in jail but committed suicide in his cell just a month later. developing right now, president obama says the u.s. is now involved in the search for hundreds of teenaged girls kidnapped from their school in nigeria. as susan mcginnis reports, there's also a big push to punish the group behind the attack. reporter: for three weeks, nigerians have been demanding their government find hundreds of girls abducted from their

dorms. president obama confirmed to megan glaros of our cbs chicago station that the white house is now stepping in to help. >> we're sending in a team made up of our military and law enforcement and other experts and we're very glad that nigeria has accepted the help. >> reporter: secretary of state john kerry said the u.s. offered assistance soon after the kidnappings last month. >> our embassy has been engaged and, uhm, we have been engaged, but the government had its own set of, uhm, strategies if you will. >> reporter: in the video that surfaced mondays the islamic terrorist group boko haram claimed responsibility and threatened to sell the girls into slavery. >> there is trafficking in west africa. there are some remnants of slavery in west africa. uhm, so it's possible, i suppose, that the -- the girls could fall into that trap. >> reporter: on tuesday, senate lawmakers were among those who gathered on capitol hill to pray for the girls. >> this is a moral test for the world.

this is a moral test for our own country. >> reporter: all 20 female senators are pushing president obama to impose international sanctions on boko haram. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. >> there are reports boko haram is also behind the kidnapping of eight more girls this week. the u.s. has a $7 million bounty on the head of its leader. president obama will be in the silicon valley tomorrow and friday. the president will attend democratic fundraisers tomorrow at a private home in los altos and the fairmont hotel in downtown san jose. and friday morning the president is scheduled to visit a walmart store in mountain view to talk about energy efficiency. 5:14. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> we do have a number of accidents actually for this time of the morning. one in san leandro blocking a lane counter-commute. heads up in the area, you may find a few delays. our speed sensors say 65 miles per hour but it is eastbound 580 approaching 150th. and then we have this accident, as well. they have actually flown in a

helicopter to do some sort of rescue. vasco road at camino diablo. story of survival this is in brentwood but it sounds like a stretch of vasco is closed near that intersection. and a traffic alert remains in effect in danville. we are not sure how much longer it will be out there but it was issued around 3:00 this morning. two lanes are blocked southbound 680 between el pintado and the el cerro exit and the el pintado off-ramp is closed while the investigation continues. the driver was hurt in the crash. a live look outside the san mateo bridge still looking good but we have a chp-issued high wind advisory so just watch out for that if you are heading across the span between the east and the west areas. the bay bridge no longer' problem, no more roadwork. all the approaches look good, as well. and all the roadwork wrapped up on the east shore freeway, westbound 80 carquinez bridge to the maze holding steady about 19 minutes. westbound 580 still clear through the livermore valley. of course, that could change here pretty shortly. but mass transit a great option so far bart systemwide

reporting no delays. remember kcbs when you hit the roads at 106.9 fm or 740-am. that's your latest traffic. with the forecast, here's lawrence. you know, we had that area of low pressure make its way across the sierra nevada yesterday. but that is moving further to the east. that means the winds are going to start to calm down. that's some good news. we have 40-mile-an-hour gusts along the coastline yesterday but today it will be breezy but yeah, we're not going to see those strong winds like we had yesterday. still we have a couple of patches of fog this morning and hazy inside the bay. sunny and mild weather to return as we look toward the afternoon. the temperatures just a little bit warmer but much warmer weather on the weekend. there's that low that i was talking about that's kicked eastward a bit. because of that, the winds aren't going to be as strong today. still a bit of a breeze out toward the coastline. but much more comfortable. hey, you know what? it's going to start to warm up in the central valley today as much as 80 degrees in sacramento. 79 in fresno. 50s up in the high country for this afternoon and partly cloudy skies. we have patchy fog this morning along the coastline. i think tomorrow though more clouds on the way as the system

starts to roll into the bay area. looks like just some passing clouds and most of the rain is going to stay to the north. temperatures around the bay area today in the 60s and 70s in the south bay. 50s and 60s toward the coastline. maybe some mid-70s well inland by the afternoon. and then still breezy into san francisco about 63 degrees and 60 in daly city. next couple of days, we have a cold front sliding into the bay area bringing some more clouds for tomorrow. and then as we get into friday and the weekend, look at that. we have lots of sunshine coming our way. think we're looking at some offshore winds into sunday maybe temperatures popping up near 70 degrees along the coastline, 80s in the valleys. getting a little hot, though, guys next week maybe some 90s. >> looks like it. shorts on tuesday. >> and monday i am sick. i'm already sick. outside in sunnyvale now it's 54 degrees, lots of clear skies but we came inside to one of the oldest fruit stands left in the santa clara valley. it is the olson family fruit stand and you know, this is really close to my heart because santa clara county is one of the oldest original counties in california. it was back in the '30s when my mom actually picked prunes out in the fields here in santa clara county. and we had prunes and apricots and, yes, cherries. so to tell us about cherry season we have deborah olson one of the family members of one of the oldest fruit stands in california. >> yes, indeed. my great grandparents came out here in the early 1900s and decided to stay here and raise a family, raise cherries and in the day, it was the best growing area to raise cherries apricots and prudence as were you saying earlier. >> it's amazing i drove here to sunnyvale early this morning and you're located off camino real and the north mathilda. >> yes. >> and do you see this old-

fashioned stand in the sprawling area? >> yes indeed. it was my goal to continue in tradition. i had to make a decision personally if i wanted to continue with the fruit stand business and i decided to and i wanted to keep the same feel, the country charm of it all so people when they do come to the area they find out what our area was all about. >> okay. now, the biggest question of the morning is, i know it's northern california cherry time. these are probably from bakersfield. >> between fresno and bakersfield. >> when is it local cherry time? >> in about two more weeks. i just checked out the cherry orchard and i imagine in two weeks we'll be starting to pick out of our orchards and then moving to morgan hill. >> it's earlier cherry season there because of the weather? >> yes, it is. warmer weather and different cherries. these cherries require less chilling hours, our famous bing cherries here in sunnyvale require more chilling so they are going to come later. >> reporter: michelle and frank and even lawrence and elizabeth, i win today because

good morning, it's wednesday, may 7. i'm michelle griego. >> 5:30. i'm frank mallicoat. >> new this morning, a mountain lion is caught after roaming around mountain view. cate caugiran reports. >> reporter: a nonprofit group called sprues pupil that society has -- santa cruz puma society has been tracking 46m, looking to establish his own territory. typically, these cats are viewed from afar or at the zoo not in an underground parking garage. >> kind of uncommon for it to come all the way down through here. but, that being said there is a trail that cuts through the stevens creek trail through this area. so it may have taken that route. >> reporter: police say this big kitty came into rangesdorf park around 6:30 last night then took a stroll across california street before landing at the casa del rey

apartments. that's where he sat for hours. officers believe he was a far ways from home. >> palo alto police department has had some sightings and some things several years ago. so their natural habitat i believe would be up in that area. >> reporter: guns were drawn, the complex surrounded as game ward inches struggled to tranquilize the animal. the process took so long because it turned out the wardens didn't have all the parts they needed for their tranquilize gun. they had to call in another game warden to finish the job. as they worked, police officers were ready to kill the cat if it tried to run. but it wasn't necessary. we were there when the cat was pulled out safely. police say this wasn't the first sighting of a mountain lion but the first time one came into the heart of the city. >> we suggest obviously that if anybody sees one to call 911 immediately. don't try to pet it. you're not a mountain lion whisperer. let the professionals handle it. >> reporter: 46m is being held in an undisclosed location,

[ screaming ] >> the "oakland tribune" reports a contra costa county judge dropped the misdemeanor charge last week. the 16-year-old had completed a conflict resolution program. we now have a better understanding of that incident that has miami, florida police investigating colin kaepernick and two other nfl players. 911 calls have now been released. a seattle seahawks player told police a naked woman was

police confirmed he is in the custody of the santa clara county department of family and children services. >> we are just informed recently that he does have legal counsel. so again, that kind of presented a whole 'nother issue in itself. >> reporter: so right now san jose police are trying to talk to this boy and trying to track down his lawyer. no word yet on how that's going but they are considering charges. live at the airport, kiet do, kpix 5. >> the sentence could end up being just a citation and a fine. and we have some developing news from western contra costa county, which could lose its main hospital. a parcel tax to keep doctors medical center open failed to get the two-thirds majority for passage yesterday so that means the hospital in san pablo is likely to be shut down by july. the hospital sees 45,000 patients a year mostly low income residents out of richmond, san pablo and martinez. >> people will not only die, the adjacent communities will suffer a lot because they would

not be able to take on the onslaught of the sick people going to them. >> this hospital has been able to pull a rabbit out of a hat many times. it looks like we may have no more rabbits to pull out of a hat. >> the county may look into taking that hospital over. in san jose, a man is dead after a shooting that began with a traffic dispute. it started just after 10:00 yesterday morning near tully and center road. police say the drivers of a pickup and silver volkswagen jetta pulled over and the pickup driver was shot after he got out of his vehicle. the two men in the jetta took off and are still at large. the pickup driver died of his wounds at a hospital last night. happening today, uc-santa cruz scientists will tag baby falcons at the pg&e building in san francisco. the nest is it on the 33rd floor of the high-rise. three spinning babies will tagged with abandon each leg allowing scientists to track

happen just before 10 p.m. she was driving behind this car as it sped through the marina and hit a pedestrian. >> really violently got hit by this car probably going over 60 miles an hour. >> reporter: police had been following the car thinking it might be stolen. that's when it hit another car injuring the driver and that pedestrian before slamming into this garage. the people in the car ran away. diane and other witnesses chased them yelling. >> "murderer! you're going for life in jail and just hope you -- you you know -- just die i jail." >> reporter: police detained several people but no arrests. the pedestrian that was hit was taken to the hospital. >> i really hope that person is going to be okay because i thought that person was dead right there. >> reporter: yes. but according to police, the injuries to that pedestrian and the person who was driving the other car that was hit are not life-threatening. live in san francisco's marina district, anne makovec, kpix 5.
